Beecher’s Handmade Cheese first opened its doors in 2003 in Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market with a mission to create authentic food. Starting with locally sourced ingredients and employing time-honored methods, Beecher’s produces delicious cheese that is free of artificial additives and full of handmade goodness.

The Challenge

Beecher’s Handmade Cheese was expanding its product offerings in the consumer packaged goods sector, adding frozen meals and snack products to grocery retailers nationwide. To drive awareness, the company organized a summer marketing campaign. However their website, the primary source of campaign traffic, needed to be updated to reflect recent changes in their brand and retail sales strategy. The website needed to match the new brand direction of their packaging and shift its focus from direct-to-consumer sales toward guiding customers to nearby retail locations.

The Solution

Research and User Testing

We began by researching direct and indirect competitors of Beecher’s product offerings to gain an understanding of the current branding landscape, marketing strategies, and customer experiences within that sector. Based on this research, we developed several user flows and conducted user tests with 12 prospective consumers. The results helped guide our UX decisions during the design phase of the project.

Brand Refresh

During user testing, we also updated the Beecher’s Cheese brand. We researched competitors and worked closely with Beecher’s creative team to develop several initial design ideas. After getting feedback and making revisions, we chose one final design approach. This approach guided the entire website design, making it consistent with Beecher’s other recent marketing.

Development

Beyond the updated design and UX, we did a backend re-platform away from Shopify to a more editable WordPress site. We launched several versions of the website to ensure Beecher’s online presence supported their marketing needs throughout the project.
